Research and Nonprofit Cloud Credits

Research credits are proposal-based grants with published caps. Google Cloud research credits pay up to $5,000 for faculty, postdoctoral and nonprofit lab researchers and up to $1,000 for PhD students, which covers a semester of experiments but not a GPU cluster. AWS Cloud Credit for Research caps student awards at $5,000 and leaves faculty and staff awards uncapped, sized to the proposal. Microsoft's nonprofit offer is simpler: $2,000 in donated Azure credits per year for registered organizations. Terms here were checked on November 2, 2026.

Eligibility is institutional, not personal. Google limits research grants to accredited higher education institutions and eligible nonprofit research institutions in about 70 countries, and a faculty member accepts the credit on behalf of the institution. AWS wants full-time faculty, full-time research staff or graduate, post-graduate and PhD students at an accredited research institution, and it reviews proposals on a rolling basis over 90 to 120 days with no expedited track. Google for Nonprofits excludes governments, hospitals and schools.

The fine print bites after the award. Google research credits must be activated within 60 days of the project start date and expire 365 days after redemption, and the form asks how you'll fund the work once they run out. AWS research credits can't be spent on internal administrative workloads, and AWS promotional credit for research and nonprofit programs expires after one year. Microsoft's Accelerating Foundation Models Research program has concluded, with an agentic AI successor and no published credit amounts.

How to get the most from research and nonprofit credits

Write the 250 words around tools

Google caps the research proposal at 250 words and spells out what it wants: the research problem, the Google Cloud tools you’ll use, a timeline with milestones and outcomes, and how Google Cloud could support future research. Name the services (BigQuery, Vertex AI, Compute Engine with GPUs) and the data volumes. A paragraph of scientific motivation with no cloud specifics reads as a mismatch to the reviewer, and 250 words go fast.

Start the clock on your terms

Google credits must be activated within 60 days of the project start date you entered, and they expire 365 days after the coupon is redeemed. AWS promotional credit for research expires one year from the date you receive the code. Put the start date a few weeks after the expected decision so the award isn’t already ticking while you hire a student or clean the dataset. A month lost at the front is a month of compute gone.

Expect a long AWS review

AWS Cloud Credit for Research proposals typically take 90 to 120 days to review, and expedited reviews aren’t available. A proposal submitted in November lands in February or March at best. Submit before the grant period starts, not when the first cloud bill arrives, and run early experiments on the Free plan or the Google $300 trial while you wait. Nobody at AWS will hurry it along for you.

Separate research from admin workloads

AWS research credits can’t be used for internal administrative workloads, and Google credits may only be used for the research described in the proposal. Keep the lab website, mail and shared drives on a different billing account. Mixing them risks the credit and makes the usage report at renewal time impossible to defend. Two billing accounts cost nothing extra and save an awkward conversation later.

Register the nonprofit first

Microsoft requires organizations to register and confirm eligibility before the $2,000 Azure credit appears, and Google for Nonprofits validates charities through its partner Goodstack before any product, including the $250 per month Google Maps Platform credit, can be activated. Both validations take time and ask for registration documents, so start them before you need the compute, not the week the project kicks off.

Plan the handoff before expiry

The Google application asks how you’ll fund the project after the credit expires in one year, and the honest answer usually involves a grant line item or an institutional cloud account. Export data to cheaper storage classes, shut down notebooks, and document the environment so a successor can rebuild it. Credits that end with a surprise bill rarely get renewed, and the reviewer remembers.

Research and nonprofit credits questions

how much are google cloud research credits
Up to $5,000 in Google Cloud credits for faculty, postdoctoral and nonprofit lab researchers, and up to $1,000 for PhD students. Credits expire 365 days after issuance or when used up, and must be activated within 60 days of the project start date. They cover compute, storage and analytics but not Maps Platform, support packages or cryptocurrency mining, so budget the whole project around those three.
how long does aws cloud credit for research take
AWS reviews proposals on a rolling basis throughout the year, typical reviews take 90 to 120 days, and there’s no expedited option. Student awards are capped at $5,000; faculty and research staff awards have no stated cap and are sized to the proposal and documented usage. The credit is promotional credit for applicable AWS services, with EC2 limited to on-demand and spot instances.
does microsoft give azure credits to nonprofits
Yes. Microsoft donates $2,000 in Azure services credits per year, with access to the full range of Azure products. Your organization must register through the Microsoft nonprofit program and confirm eligibility first, and Microsoft publishes a setup guide for applying the credit to a subscription. The older Azure for Research award program and the AFMR foundation models program are no longer accepting proposals.
does google for nonprofits include google cloud credits
Not as a standing allowance. Google for Nonprofits covers Workspace for Nonprofits, Ad Grants, the YouTube Nonprofit Program and Google Maps Platform credits of $250 per month. For Cloud credits it points nonprofits to the Data Solutions for Change program without stating an amount. Nonprofit research labs can instead apply for the regular research credits, which cap at $5,000.
can phd students apply for cloud research credits
Yes on both Google Cloud and AWS. Google awards PhD students up to $1,000, to be used only for the project in the application and in their capacity as a student. AWS accepts graduate, post-graduate and PhD students at accredited research institutions, with student awards capped at $5,000. A faculty sponsor usually strengthens the proposal, and Google requires faculty to hold the larger $5,000 awards on behalf of the institution.
